Welcome to the first of many rants that I like to call Thoughts!
It’s essentially a blog, but no matter what we call it, it’s my reflection on subjects and topics that have my attention.
The title of my first “thought” is appropriate and is a question I get asked often.
Why do I write?
I’ll start by asking what is writing? When most people think of art, they think of the Mona Lisa hanging on a wall in the Louvre. I say that any art is simply a form or expression or communication from one living thing to another.
It is my interpretation of the world.
Sometimes it agrees with people and sometimes it doesn’t. Some people think the Mona Lisa is a brilliant painting with many layers and details. Others may see an ugly woman with a crooked smiled. That’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t matter, or rather shouldn’t matter what someone thinks of your work because it’s just you expressing yourself outward and any other opinions are just that, opinions.
So why do I write?
I’ll go back a little to say that I never used to write. I read quite a bit as a child and adult, but never really wrote anything. Not even a short story. So many of my close friends and family were shocked when I released my first novel, The Jungle Within. The best answer I can give as to why I write is that it has always been inside me, waiting for me to put a story to words with metaphors and descriptions that show you, the reader, the world from my point of view. And to be honest, it’s a beautiful thing to connect with a writer that gets you. One that reaches you on a deeper level. It’s also equally important as a writer to connect with your audience. I have had countless discussions about The Jungle Within, ranging from family to total strangers.
Let me talk about the Jungle Within for a second. I often get asked, which book was your favorite to write? That’s like asking which child is your favorite. That being said, The Jungle Within was my first. I’m not saying it’s my best, maybe it is, I’m just saying the courage it took to take that first step and publish a book. Why is it scary? Because you put yourself out there for the whole world to grade your work. To criticize. To tell you how they don’t agree with you and how wrong you are.
So why write? Why put myself out there?
Because I love it.
The Jungle Within goes into quite a bit of detail in spirituality. It so happens that the beliefs talked about in the book are some of the very same beliefs I carry. Imagine that! So maybe I change my answer. Maybe The Jungle Within is my favorite book. Maybe I love it so much that I want to give it away. Writing has never been a “get rich quick scheme” for me. I can’t image any writer would think that. So please, enjoy a free read. Enjoy reading what I enjoyed writing. All I ask is that you sign up for my newsletter on my webpage. I will send out weekly “Thoughts” links and I promise not to spam you. The link to sign up for my newsletter is below.
So, get out there and express yourself. Dance. Sing. Write. Whatever makes you happy. And after you express yourself and exert some energy, take some down time and relax with my book. I look forward to connecting with all of you.
